What September Affair Is About
An industrialist and a pianist meet while travelling and fall in love. Then a strange accident of fate: the plane they are assumed to have boarded goes down and both are taken for dead, although they were not on it. That gives them the chance to cut away from their old lives entirely and live together. But an arrangement built artificially gets heavier with time. William Dieterle's film takes place in Italy, in Florence and on Capri. Joan Fontaine and Joseph Cotten lead. It is a melodrama that builds the fantasy of escape and then dismantles it piece by piece, and what it is really asking is whether a person can actually leave a past behind.
