What Sharkwater Is About

Rob Stewart had been obsessed with sharks since he was a child. He became a biologist and an underwater photographer, and then picked up a camera to argue about what these animals actually are. The film dismantles the received image of the shark as a monster and at the same time lays out the scale of the fin trade: millions of sharks caught for their fins alone and thrown back into the sea. Stewart goes after poachers in the waters off Costa Rica and the Galapagos alongside Paul Watson, and it turns dangerous quickly. Finning is now banned in more than ninety countries. Stewart died in a dive in 2017 while shooting the sequel.
