What Snow-White and Rose-Red Is About
In this adaptation of the Grimm tale, two sisters, Snow-White and Rose-Red, live with their mother at the edge of the forest and are kind to everything that crosses their path. Deep in the woods there is a mountain spirit who guards an underground treasure jealously, and who has turned two lost princely brothers, Michael and Andreas, into animals. The spell will only break if a human offers them sincere love, and the two girls are the only people likely to. Siegfried Hartmann's 1979 film belongs to East Germany's long tradition of fairy tale features. In seventy minutes it sets greed against kindness without turning it into a lesson; evil here is not a great villain but a small habit of refusing to share. The tale itself is one of the less familiar entries in the Grimm collection, and the cast includes Czech actors.
