What The Tinder Box Is About
A poor soldier walking home meets a witch who offers him gold if he will climb into a hollow tree and bring back an old tinderbox. He takes the gold, refuses to hand over the box, and settles into the nearest town, where he gives freely to the poor and lets the rich take advantage of him until the money is gone and all he has left is their friendship and the tinderbox. Striking it summons three dogs, and the dogs get him to the princess her father keeps locked away because of a prophecy that she will marry a common soldier. Siegfried Hartmann’s DEFA version of the Hans Christian Andersen tale drew more than five million admissions in East Germany after its 1959 release, while political misgivings kept it out of West German cinemas until 1961.
