What Stand by for Action Is About
A lieutenant from a wealthy family who learned the sea by racing his yacht rises fast in the navy and is made junior aide to a rear admiral. He is entirely sure of himself, but the difference between real duty and life in the drawing room soon shows itself. The film was made during the war years and speaks from a position that affirms the navy, holding comedy and battle scenes inside the same account. It is worth watching with that tone in mind, because the film was also made to contribute to the morale production of the period. Robert Taylor and Charles Laughton appear in Robert Z. Leonard’s hundred and nine minute American film, completed in 1942.
