What Ziegfeld Girl Is About
Three MGM stars in one picture: Lana Turner as an elevator operator, Judy Garland as a girl raised in vaudeville, Hedy Lamarr as a wife living inside her husband's shadow, all three swept into the Ziegfeld revue. The film charges each of them a different price for the stage, and it gives the harshest outcome to the brightest one. James Stewart, in one of his last films before the war, plays the man Turner leaves behind. Robert Z. Leonard directed, but the enormous production numbers people remember were staged by Busby Berkeley. The distance between what happens onstage and what happens behind it is unusually cruel for 1941. Who it is for: viewers who like the dark underside of studio-era musicals. Who it is not for: anyone wanting an evening of untroubled revue.
