Stephen the Great: Vaslui 1475

The film is set in the year 1475. At its centre is Stephen the Great, the ruler of Moldavia. Stephen finds an Ottoman army before him. The film puts the size of that army at a hundred and twenty thousand. That figure is the work’s own. Stephen prepares for battle. The outcome of the battle bears on a wide area. The film points to the weight that outcome carried for Christian Europe. The account moves forward through the preparations for war. The battle fills the last part of the film. The work runs history and war film together. Gheorghe Cozorici and Gheorghe Dinică take the leads, with Violeta Andrei and Toma Dimitriu also in the cast, in Mircea Drăgan’s Romanian film of 1975.
