What The Column Is About
At the end of Trajan’s Dacian wars, in 106 AD, south western Dacia is turned into a Roman province, and the real matter begins after that: how the victors and the defeated are to live on the same land. The emperor assigns Tiberius, one of his generals, to strengthen the northern frontier together with the local population; against this the Dacian chieftain Gerula withdraws into the mountains and decides to carry on the resistance. The film sets these two positions, accommodation and revenge, side by side. Mircea Drăgan’s hundred and thirty six minute Romanian film started from the reliefs of Trajan’s Column in Rome, with a screenplay by Titus Popovici. Richard Johnson plays Tiberius and Ilarion Ciobanu plays Gerula; it was completed in 1968 and is the film Romania submitted for the foreign language film Oscar.
