What Tangos, the Exile of Gardel Is About
A group of Argentines who fled the military government and settled in Paris are trying to put together a show that joins tango with tragedy and comedy; they call it a tanguedia. Juan Uno, who plays the bandoneon, waits for the text to arrive from Buenos Aires, but no word comes from the man who is to send it. The days spent in the rehearsal room turn around the country left behind, the people who disappeared and a life that cannot be returned to, and the account moves on without separating the real from the dreamed. Fernando E. Solanas’s hundred and nineteen minute Argentine French production was made just after the military years and took the grand special prize at Venice in 1985. Marie Laforêt and Miguel Ángel Solá appear.
