What Social Genocide Is About
Fernando Solanas's 2004 documentary traces Argentina's road from the military dictatorship of 1976 to the uprising of December 2001. Its argument is stated openly: the privatisation and liberalisation programme run by the governments that followed the dictatorship did not enrich the country, it stripped it. Solanas lines up the sale of public companies below their value, the rewriting of labour law, the spread of malnutrition in a country that exports food, and the disappearance of people's savings in a banking collapse. The film takes a side and makes no secret of it; Solanas narrates it himself. He received an honorary Golden Bear in Berlin in 2004.
