What The 8-Year Engagement Is About
Hisashi and Mai are in their twenties, engaged and happy. Three months before the wedding Mai falls seriously ill, her heart stops briefly, and she goes into a deep coma. Hisashi visits the hospital every morning before work. Years pass and even Mai's parents tell him to find someone else, and he refuses. Eventually she wakes and manages a few words, but the brain damage has taken him: she does not know who he is. Takahisa Zeze adapted a true story, with Takeru Satoh and Tao Tsuchiya in the leads. What the film is actually about is not the miracle but the decision to stay for years beside someone who does not recognise you.
