What The Baroness and the Butler Is About
Johann Porok, whose family has served as butlers in the house of the Hungarian prime minister for three generations, is unexpectedly elected to parliament, and as the candidate of the opposition progressive party at that. But he has no intention of giving up his job: by day he speaks against the government in the chamber, in the evening he goes on laying the table in the same house. The prime minister is content with the odd arrangement, knowing he will not find a better butler; his daughter, Baroness Katrina, considers the man a traitor and treats him coldly. When the butler says what he feels, the way she sees him begins to change. William Powell and Annabella appear in Walter Lang’s eighty minute American film, completed in 1938.
