What The City Defends Itself Is About
Four men rob the takings of a football stadium and, as soon as the job is done, decide to split up and hide separately. The decision looks sensible at first, but once each of them goes back to his own life, hiding the money, keeping quiet and avoiding suspicion each become separate tests. As the police close in on them one by one, the city itself turns into a kind of net and where each man will be caught becomes a matter of time. Pietro Germi’s seventy seven minute Italian film is about the aftermath rather than the robbery, and it shows the criminals not as monsters but as people who have been cornered. Gina Lollobrigida, Renato Baldini and Cosetta Greco appear, with Fausto Tozzi in the cast. It was completed in 1951.
