What The Coming War on China Is About
John Pilger's documentary rests on a single thesis: that a confrontation is being prepared between the United States and China, and that it is Washington doing the preparing. The film counts the American bases that ring China, shows the protests on Okinawa, and talks to historians. Pilger narrates it himself and does not hide his view. The strongest part of the film is not the thesis but the record: the nuclear tests carried out in the Marshall Islands from 1946 onward and the health problems the islanders still live with. That part is documented history. The film's handling of China drew criticism; reviewers wrote that Pilger makes China too passive and does not go far enough into its internal questions. A viewer needs to know both.
