What The War You Don't See Is About
John Pilger's documentary looks at a century of war reporting: from censorship in the First World War to Hiroshima, from Vietnam to Iraq and Afghanistan. Its argument is plain; in Pilger's account the large news organisations did not act as an independent check in these wars but carried the state's version. The practice of embedded journalism, how the weapons of mass destruction claim was passed on, and how civilian casualties were described are taken in turn. The most striking passages are Pilger's confrontations with news executives: Fran Unsworth of the BBC and David Mannion of ITV News defend why they relayed the weapons claim without questioning it. Reporters including Dan Rather and Rageh Omaar speak in the film, as does Julian Assange. Pilger's method is contested; critics say he quotes selectively and does not give the other side enough room. The documentary is a piece of advocacy and should be read as one. Alan Lowery worked on it alongside Pilger.
