Hrant Tokhatyan What The Earthquake Is About
On 7 December 1988 the Spitak earthquake flattened towns across Armenia within seconds and killed tens of thousands of people. Sarik Andreasyan's film follows two men digging for survivors: Konstantin Berezhnoy, a Russian of fifty, and Robert Melkonyan, an Armenian of twenty eight. There is something unsettled between their pasts that will not close easily, and the film takes its real tension from there rather than from the rubble. It is less a disaster picture than an account of what people do to one another after one.
