What The Elegant Life of Mr. Everyman Is About
A salaryman’s drunken ranting in public draws the attention of journalists, who press him into telling them the story of his life. What follows is how ordinary a life reckoned ordinary really stays once it is told. The film speaks of the tiredness carried by a generation in postwar Japan, of the narrow passage between work and home, and of the everyday that lies buried under the large stories. The account was adapted from a book and does not run its time straight; it moves between remembering, reenactment and joking. The man’s discomfort at recounting himself is the film’s true subject. Keiju Kobayashi plays the lead in Kihachi Okamoto’s hundred and three minute Japanese film, completed in 1963.
