What Japan's Longest Day Is About

The twenty-four hours from noon on 14 August 1945 to noon on 15 August. After Hiroshima and Nagasaki the Japanese government has decided to surrender, and part of the army wants to fight to the end. The Emperor's surrender speech is cut onto a record, and young officers storm the palace to seize the recording and stop the broadcast. Kihachi Okamoto's 1967 film takes that single night almost minute by minute. Toshiro Mifune plays War Minister Korechika Anami, and the film turns on his being caught between his own conviction and his loyalty to the Emperor. Okamoto described the film as an expression of his anti-war feeling, and the fidelity to historical detail was a deliberate choice.
