What The Fall of Ako Castle Is About
The tale of the Forty-Seven Ronin as Kinji Fukasaku tells it. In 1701 Lord Asano is goaded into drawing his sword inside the Shogun's palace, an offence that carried the death penalty, and the sentence is carried out at once. When the new Shogun seizes every asset the clan owns, thousands of samurai and commoners are left jobless and landless overnight. Forty-seven of Asano's retainers quietly band together to take their revenge on Lord Kira, who pushed their master into it. Fukasaku refuses to turn the material into a fable of nobility and sacrifice; he stays with the months after the castle falls, with the waiting, the hiding and the price the families pay for it. A large cast led by Kinnosuke Nakamura and including Sonny Chiba carries a period film running well past two and a half hours.
