What The Great Gatsby Is About
Nick Carraway, newly arrived on Long Island from the Midwest, is pulled toward the parties and the unexplained money of his neighbour Jay Gatsby, and ends up a witness to an obsession. This 1949 version of Fitzgerald's novel was made at the height of the Production Code. When the censors rejected the script as morally low, screenwriter Richard Maibaum got it approved by opening the film with Nick and Jordan quoting a line from Proverbs. Decades later Maibaum criticised his own solution, saying Fitzgerald was never that direct and that the moralising was the price he paid to get the picture made. Hard to see for a long time, the film has since been restored and reissued.
