What The Great Hypnotist Is About
Xu Ruining is considered the best in his field and is entirely sure of himself, treating his patients under hypnosis. Then he takes on Ren Xiaoyan, abandoned by her family, who says she sees ghosts. He does not believe her and decides to hypnotise her, but as the sessions go on it stops being clear who is opening up whom. Leste Chen builds the film almost entirely in one room between two people, generating the tension out of glances. There is an explanation at the end, so the first half rewards attention. Xu Zheng, known for comedy, plays it completely straight opposite Karen Mok.
