What The Greengage Summer Is About
A British girl is on holiday in France with her family. Over the course of the summer she steps out of childhood into something else. The world of the adults around her opens up all at once. For the first time she sees the world of adults, and love, at close range. A relationship between two women is part of the account as well. The work tells it without alarm and without softening it either. The account runs across a single summer and takes its time. Susannah York and Kenneth More take the leads, with Danielle Darrieux also in the cast, in Lewis Gilbert’s British film of 1961.
