What The Holy Inquisition Is About
Arturo Ripstein’s 1974 film is set in sixteenth-century New Spain, in the years when the Holy Office was charged with punishing anyone practising the law of Moses. A Jewish family who fled persecution in Spain has established itself in Mexico, having given one of its sons to the Church as cover for what the household still does in private. That son, now a Dominican friar, comes to his father’s funeral, sees his mother and siblings observing Jewish rites, and denounces them. What follows destroys all of them. Ripstein works out his account of intolerance from inside colonial Mexico rather than at a distance from it. It competed for the Palme d’Or at Cannes in 1974.
