What The Human Comedy Is About
Homer Macauley is a high school student in a small California town called Ithaca. His older brother Marcus is about to leave for the war, so Homer stays home to support the family and takes a job at the telegraph office. The job is delivering telegrams, which makes him the boy carrying news from the front to one door after another. The story is William Saroyan's; he wrote the first version of it, won the Academy Award for original story, and only then turned it into a novel. The small-town America here is that of an Armenian-American writer born in Fresno. Clarence Brown shot it during the war and tells it without ever showing the war. Mickey Rooney was nominated for best actor.
