What The Jester's Tale Is About
During the Thirty Years’ War the ploughman Petr is pressed into the army and begins to be dragged between the two sides of the war; Matěj, a recruiter, and Lenka, a country girl, join him on the road. The three are thrown from front to front, never able to tell whom they are fighting for, and the war itself becomes for them a chain of accidents; in the film the god of war wanders the sky as a moustachioed cloud and changes the wind. Karel Zeman’s eighty two minute Czechoslovak film combines live action with animation and makes the image resemble the engraving style of Matthäus Merian. He wrote the screenplay with Pavel Juráček; it was completed in 1964 and won best picture and best director at the San Francisco film festival.
