What The Land of Happiness Is About
Finland in the early sixties, drunk on the tango. Tenho comes back from his unlucky adventures in the city to his parents’ farm and spends a while as the joke of the local men, until something starts between him and Virva, who works in the cowshed, and the laughing stops. This was the first of Markku Pölönen’s films to reach cinemas, and it is over in sixty-one minutes with no interest in stretching itself. The tangos Reijo Taipale sings live are not background music but the thing that keeps the film’s own time. It took several Jussi awards, best picture and best screenplay among them.
