What Land of Hope Is About
After the Second World War, Finland settled evacuees from Karelia and disabled veterans on forest land in the north: each family was given a plot and left to clear it. Anni comes from a well-off family and has never had a hard day. She falls in love with Veikko, disabled in the war, leaves everything behind and goes out to that forest with him. The beginning is good; then winter, debt, illness and the question of how much two people can take from each other arrive. Markku Pölönen shows a founding story of modern Finland without dressing it up.
