What The Long Arm Is About
Scotland Yard detectives work outward from the clues left at a safe robbery in London toward a run of the same crime across England. Charles Frend's 1956 film continues the police procedural manner Ealing had made popular with The Blue Lamp in 1950: no genius detective, no sudden intuition, just files, shifts and possibilities eliminated one at a time. Jack Hawkins leads it and plays the part not as a hero but as a tired official trying to finish a job. It was released in the United States as The Third Key. That it belongs to Ealing's last years gives it a particular place as well.
