What San Demetrio London Is About
In 1940, in the middle of the Atlantic, the tanker San Demetrio is set alight by a German heavy cruiser and abandoned by her crew. The next day one of the lifeboats drifts back to the burning ship; seeing that she has still not blown up, the men decide to climb aboard and put the fires out. In the end they manage to start the engine again and set out to reach Britain against every likelihood. Adapted from a real event, the film was made while the war was still on and keeps clear of heroic language, looking instead at the men doing the work. Charles Frend’s ninety seven minute British film was completed in 1943.
