What Cone of Silence Is About
A passenger jet flown by an experienced pilot comes down on takeoff. The inquiry puts the fault on the pilot, blaming him for rotating too early. He is punished but later returns to duty. Some time after that a second crash happens in the same circumstances, and this time the pilot is killed. Someone else then begins looking into the technical side of it. What comes out has to do with how the aircraft performs on takeoff in hot weather. Rather than hunt for a guilty man, the film looks at the system itself. The story is adapted from a novel by David Beaty. Michael Craig and Peter Cushing appear in Charles Frend’s British film of 1960.
