The Looney, Looney, Looney Bugs Bunny Movie

The film is built as an awards ceremony. Bugs Bunny hosts and, in three parts, presents old Looney Tunes shorts. The first part is about Tweety and the cat, the second a pirate story, and the third a tale built on a bargain with the devil. Newly made linking scenes come between the parts and the award is handed out at the end. Friz Freleng directs. Mel Blanc and June Foray provide the voices. It is not a new film; it was assembled largely from the studio's shorts of the forties and fifties, with new animation added between them. The method was common at the time; the studio made several compilation films to bring its archive to cinemas. Mel Blanc voices nearly all the characters, and that comes from the original recordings of the shorts. Its best parts are the old shorts themselves; the new linking scenes are visually weaker. Friz Freleng was one of the studio's founding directors and most of the shorts included are his. The narrative has no unity and the film works like a variety programme. Who it is for: viewers who like the classic Looney Tunes shorts. Who it is not for: there is little new material, the linking scenes are weak, and the structure is loose.
