What The Lunatics Is About
A social worker looks after people living on the streets of Hong Kong whom nobody will take responsibility for because of their mental illness. A reporter who hears about the work attaches himself to it, and the reporting becomes a question in its own right: is this telling these people’s stories or using them? Derek Yee’s first film as director shows what the system does to them and also where the man trying to help runs out of road. Stanley Fung plays him; Tony Leung Chiu-wai is Doggie, who struggles to speak, and Chow Yun-fat a father raising two children on a rubbish dump. Paul Chun won best supporting actor in 1987.
