What The Mexican Suitcase Is About
Fleeing Paris in 1939, Robert Capa left behind the negatives he had shot in the Spanish Civil War. A friend carried the case to Bordeaux, where it was entrusted to a Chilean diplomat, and the box was found seventy years later in a cupboard in Mexico. Inside were four thousand five hundred frames by Capa, by Gerda Taro and by David Seymour. The documentary tells the journey of the case, the story of the Spaniards who took refuge in Mexico after the war, and the way Spain today deals with its own past. What joins the three lines is the question of who chooses to remember what. Trisha Ziff’s eighty six minute production was completed in 2011.
