The Silk Road Ensemble, founded by Yo-Yo Ma, takes its name from the old trade route linking Asia, Africa and Europe, and gathers musicians from all over the world onto one stage. The documentary follows the making of the group and its tours while staying with a few of them: the Galician piper Cristina Pato, the Iranian kamancheh player Kayhan Kalhor, the Chinese pipa player Wu Man and the Syrian clarinettist Kinan Azmeh. It arrived at a time when war was also destroying cultural heritage, and Syria is home to two of these musicians, so the subject is more than a pleasant collaboration. Morgan Neville directed. The record gives the year as 2016, though the film was finished in 2015 and shown at festivals that year.
