What The Mysterious Castle in the Carpathians Is About
Oldřich Lipský's 1981 Czechoslovak film is a parody adapted from Jules Verne's novel. In 1897, Professor Orfanik, living in a castle in the Carpathians, works on inventions including television and a film camera and is obsessed with recording the voice of a dead opera diva. The humour is built on anachronism: modern devices working inside a nineteenth-century set, and absurdities presented with a straight face. Lipský's visual language imitates the engraving aesthetic of the period and the effects are deliberately handmade. It is one of the best-known examples of the Czech comic tradition. The joke density is high and some passages rest on cultural references. Who it's for: viewers who like Czech comedy and adaptations of Jules Verne. Who it's not for: anyone expecting serious science fiction, or viewers who cannot follow local references.
