What The Navigators Is About
A few men on a railway maintenance gang in South Yorkshire find the name of their employer has changed overnight. After privatisation the work is the same, but the security, the seniority and the safety rules are not, and the job goes to whoever will do it cheaper. Ken Loach tells it through the men's joking and their steadily narrowing options rather than through slogans. Rob Dawber, who wrote it, had actually worked on the railway and died from asbestos he was exposed to at work before the film was released. That alone shows how concrete the safety question is.
