What The Purple Plain Is About
Burma, 1945. Bill Forrester, a Canadian pilot, has been throwing himself at death ever since his wife was killed in the bombing of London, and the men who fly with him think he is mad and are frightened of him. The squadron doctor tries to bring him back; what actually shifts something in him is a young Burmese woman he meets nearby. Then his plane goes down, and surviving means walking hundreds of miles through enemy country. It starts as a war picture and the walk turns it into something else, a film about being alone. Adapted from H.E. Bates's novel, with a screenplay by Eric Ambler. Gregory Peck leads; it was Win Min Than's only film.
