The Reasons of the Heart

Emilia lives in Mexico City. She is a housewife in a middle class home. Her days pass exactly alike. That sameness is stifling her. Two things make her life bearable. One is her lover, the other her credit card. One day she loses both. Her lover leaves her. The card is taken from her as well. All that is left is the house. The woman feels herself thoroughly closed in. There is nobody around her she can tell. The film carries Madame Bovary into the present. Arcelia Ramírez and Vladimir Cruz take the leads, with Patricia Reyes Spíndola also in the cast, in Arturo Ripstein’s Mexican and Spanish coproduction of 2011.
