The Secret

David comes out of the woods in front of them. Julia and Thomas are a couple living in the country, away from everyone. He says he has escaped from an institution, that he was held there, and that the reason is something he knows. The people after him want him silenced. The couple do not believe him, then take him in, then cannot be sure. Is the man really being hunted, or is he ill? The film leaves the question open on purpose and gets its tension from the couple having to decide. Robert Enrico directs the French film; a hundred and two minutes, with Jean-Louis Trintignant as David, Marlène Jobert as Julia and Philippe Noiret as Thomas. Ennio Morricone wrote the score. The film never gives an answer; when the lights come up, what the secret was is still not known.
