What For Those I Loved Is About
Martin Gray loses his childhood and his family in the Warsaw ghetto, goes to America after the war, and builds a fortune there from nothing. He then settles in the south of France, marries, and has four children. In 1970 a forest fire in the region kills his wife and all four of them at once. The film is about the life lived between those two losses. Robert Enrico adapted the bestselling book Gray wrote with Max Gallo, with Michael York and Brigitte Fossey in the leads. The book's Treblinka chapter was later challenged by historians, and Gallo acknowledged having taken liberties to make the narrative stronger. Gray's years in the ghetto and the loss of his family there are not in dispute.
