During the American Civil War a civilian is about to be hanged from a bridge. The rope is round his neck, the plank is pulled from under his feet, and the rope breaks; the man falls into the river, survives, and starts running home to his wife. Robert Enrico adapted Ambrose Bierce's story as a short and used almost no dialogue, with the sound design, the images of nature and the man's breathing carrying the whole thing. It runs about twenty-eight minutes. It won a prize at Cannes and the Oscar for live action short, then went out in America as an episode of The Twilight Zone, which is how that generation knew it. Its effect depends entirely on the last seconds. Who it is for: viewers who like the short form and war stories. Who it is not for: anyone who wants to watch already knowing the ending.
