The Solid Gold Cadillac

Laura Partridge is a small shareholder with ten shares in a large corporation called International Projects. She attends the shareholders' meeting for the first time and starts asking questions: what the board is paid, what the company actually does, who takes these decisions. Nobody expected this many questions from her. The board decides the easiest way to silence her is to give her a job. The source is the Broadway play by George S. Kaufman and Howard Teichmann. Judy Holliday plays Laura and keeps the character not naive but simply honest; all the force of the comedy comes from that. George Burns narrates, commenting from outside throughout. The film was shot in black and white but the last scene is in colour, so that the gold Cadillac of the title can be seen properly. The production won an Oscar for costume design. That finale, filmed at Rockefeller Center, still sticks in the mind.
