My Sister Eileen

Ruth and her sister Eileen come to New York from Ohio. They take a basement flat in Greenwich Village. Eileen wants to be an actress and Ruth wants to write. But the city gives neither of them an easy road: the rent goes unpaid, the neighbours are odd, and subway construction runs right under the flat. There is always somebody trailing after Eileen. Richard Quine's musical comes from the stories Ruth McKenney wrote out of her own life and from the play adapted from them; Quine and Blake Edwards wrote the screenplay. The songs are by Jule Styne and Leo Robin. Bob Fosse both acts and does the choreography, his first screen credit as a choreographer. Jack Lemmon and Janet Leigh are also in the cast.
