What The World of Suzie Wong Is About
Robert Lomax gives up architecture and comes to Hong Kong to paint, allowing himself a year. The young woman he meets on the ferry introduces herself as the daughter of a wealthy family. Then he takes a cheap room in Wan Chai and sees the same woman in the hotel bar: her name is Suzie Wong and she works there. Robert starts painting her. The more there is between them, the wider the distance between the two worlds they come from. Richard Quine directs; two hours and six minutes, with Nancy Kwan as Suzie in her first film and William Holden as Robert, adapted from Richard Mason's novel. In later years the film was often cited in arguments about how Asian women have been portrayed on screen.
