What Operation Mad Ball Is About
Set in an American army hospital in France just after the Second World War. Private Hogan and Captain Lock spend the picture trying to outmanoeuvre each other over the attention of the nurses, the accounting for missing medical supplies, and a dance nobody has authorised, so the fight is small but never stops. The comedy comes not from the war but from the emptiness left in an army once the war is over. Blake Edwards, Jed Harris and Arthur Carter wrote the screenplay, drawing on an unproduced play of Carter's. It was the first time Jack Lemmon took top billing and it gave Ernie Kovacs his first major screen role, the first of three he made with Quine and Lemmon.
