What The Spessart Inn Is About

Countess Franziska sets out for the marriage her father has arranged and is taken by robbers in the forest. A ransom is demanded. But her father will not pay it. When Franziska learns this she changes sides: she chooses to stay with the robbers and starts running the band to suit herself. Kurt Hoffmann's German film starts from a tale by Wilhelm Hauff and is built as a musical comedy. Liselotte Pulver takes the lead, and the part made her one of the best-known actresses in the country. The film was among the most watched productions of postwar West Germany and two sequels followed. The tone is cheerful and aimed squarely at a family audience.
