Alexandra Auder What The State of Things Is About
The State of Things won the Golden Lion at the 39th Venice Film Festival, a Wim Wenders film born from an idea he had while helping Raúl Ruiz on a film shoot in Portugal: a film crew stranded in a foreign country after their financing collapses. This reflects a real trauma Wenders had lived through: on Hammett, produced by Francis Ford Coppola, a serious conflict of will erupted between director and studio, and in the end only about 30 percent of Wenders's own footage survived in the final cut. Director Samuel Fuller actually plays the cinematographer role within the film. Who it's for: anyone curious about a Golden Lion winner born from a director's own real studio conflict on another film. Who it's not for: viewers wanting a fictional film set story detached from personal experience.
