What Jigarthanda DoubleX Is About
In Tamil Nadu in the seventies, Kiruban, waiting to take up a police posting, is caught in a political calculation and given one route out: kill a gang leader named Alliyus Caesar. He approaches the man disguised as a film director, because Caesar's single weakness is cinema and he thinks of himself as Clint Eastwood. Karthik Subbaraj sets it before his 2014 Jigarthanda and enlarges the same idea: here cinema is not entertainment but a direct instrument of revolt. The second half attaches to the displacement of a forest-dwelling community and the register changes completely. Raghava Lawrence and SJ Suryah lead. It opened in November 2023. Who it is for: viewers who like Tamil cinema and films about filmmaking. Who it is not for: anyone wanting a consistent tone, since it swings hard from comedy into tragedy.
