The Story of Woo Viet

Woo Viet is a refugee who has fled Vietnam. He arrives at a refugee camp in Hong Kong and there meets Li Lap-Quan, the pen friend he has been writing to. In the same place he meets Shum Ching, and a bond forms between them. The two of them plan to get to the United States. But they are held up on the way and end up stranded in the Chinatown of Manila. There the local gangs turn Woo Viet into a hired killer and force Shum Ching into prostitution. The film tells the question of refugees in the shape of an action thriller. The work is the second of three films the director made about Vietnam. Chow Yun-Fat takes the lead, with Cherie Chung and Cora Miao also in the cast. Ann Hui’s ninety two minute Hong Kong film was completed in 1981.
