What Eighteen Springs Is About
Two young people who work in the same Shanghai office in the nineteen thirties, Manzhen and Shijun, fall for each other. Adapted from Eileen Chang's novel, the film follows how that attachment comes apart and how the two of them end up separated for more than a decade, between Shanghai and Nanjing. The break does not arrive as one big scene; it accumulates out of family calculation and time. It was Ann Hui's second Chang adaptation, after Love in a Fallen City in 1984. Wu Chien-lien plays Manzhen and Leon Lai plays Shijun, with Ge You and Anita Mui alongside them, and Mui drew most of the awards the film won. Lee Ping-bin shoots the years in a cold, heavy light.
